We all know
that Durga Puja to Kolkata is like chai-patti to our beloved chai.
But did you know that any Ma Durga’s idol at any Puja Pandal in Kolkata is incomplete without the mud from Shovabazar.
Yes, Shovabazar. Infamously known as the red-light area.
Have you ever wondered about the life of a sex worker’s child? What they go through? How they spend their days? What goes on in their innocent minds?
Team Hulladek, with the help of The Art of Living, Rotaract Club of Calcutta North West and Rotary Club of Calcutta North West, got in touch with these kids who we all know about, but don’t bother much to think for.
We spent time with these little bundles of joy and found so much happiness and love in their infectious smiles and easy laughs.
The children participated enthusiastically in the art competition and poured their colorful ideas into the white canvases. They were delighted by the clothes, tiffin boxes, water bottles and other gifts that were distributed on the occasion of Mahalaya.
On Saptami, we took them out for a Pujo Porikroma across North Bengal and couldn’t contain our happiness seeing how much they enjoyed themselves. We also awarded specific pandals and certified them as ‘Green Puja Pandals’ of Kolkata.
The Women and Child Development and Social Welfare minister Ms. Shashi Panja also graced us with her presence and active support to the cause.
“We just want
our kids to have a normal childhood”
– a sex worker, a mother
initiatives, we hope to inspire people to see these kids for who they are –
children. Instead of ostracizing them for their mothers’ profession.
Let’s try and help these kids have a childhood they deserve. Do whatever is in your capacity to make them feel a part of the society.
